Mother’s Day always reminds me of my beloved Grandma Margarita, the woman who, together with my maternal Grandpa Manolo, raised me.
The other day, I was thinking about all the family getaways and road trips I’ve taken with my own kids and I marveled at two interesting facts:
1. Like my grandma did with my grandfather, my wife, Angela, is the one who most often drives
2. In the 21 years I had my grandma with me, I only went on one road trip with her
I was six years old in the summer of 1976. My grandparents and I joined my mom, her husband and my two younger siblings for a mini vacation to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla. Only a few, grainy photos exist of that family vacation, but I remember it well. First, because that was my very first road trip, and second, because it was also the first time I ever saw rockets and other space travel paraphernalia that awoke my lifetime passion for technology and travel.
Several years after my abuela’s passing, I began digging through her boxes of old family photos and noticed that my grandfather spent years traveling extensively throughout the eastern U.S. and Cuba, a passion I never before knew he or my grandmother possessed.
That old box of photos revealed that although my grandma only took me one mini road trip with me, she and my grandfather were, in fact, the ones who passed on to me the gift of travel that I have such a passion for to this day. Thank you, abuela!
