Perks of Blogging: Witnessing a Guinness Book of World Record attempt for salsa dancing mark

452 couples dancing to salsa music for five minutes.

That’s all it would have taken today to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest salsa dance at Miami’s Jungle Island theme park.

I served as one of the two witnesses that certifies a world record but alas the weather didn’t help our cause.  Despite the valiant efforts of the Jungle Island’s staff to round up park visitors, and a special dance appearance by Puss in Boots and Kitty Softpaws, the world record attempt fell short by 102 couples.

Oh well, what matters is that they tried and everyone had a lot of fun trying.  The record of 451 couples was set in Caracas, Venezuela, in October 2006 but this sounds like a mark that’s destined to fall hard, especially in a city like Miami.  It WILL be broken next time.
