Day 22 of Miami to Alaska Family Road Trip: The Evil Blister and Haystack Rock

The 22nd day of our family road trip started with a short drive to Cannon Beach, Oregon where we were looking forward to viewing the awesome Haystack Rock and eating lunch at a restaurant that overlooks the famous coastal formation.

No sooner had we finished our meal than did our older daughter began to cry of pain from a blister on her thumb.  If you’ve followed our road trip so far you know where this story is going as we’ve already had four medical situations: 1. my wife’s emergency root canal surgery, 2. my son’s severe Eczema crisis, 3. my toddler’s bladder infection and 4. my wife’s big gash atop the glacier in Alaska.

Elena's half finger/half blister.

Elena’s blister was threatening to make it five doctor’s visits in one road trip.  Her blister was so seriously freaky it was the full size of her thumb making her finger look part monster/part finger. (more…)

Day 21 of Miami to Alaska Family Road Trip: Back in the U.S.A. and on to Quirky Oregon

It's kind of interesting that you won't find such a nice looking sign welcoming you to the U.S. through Mexico.

On the 21st day of our Miami to Alaska family road trip we disembarked the Disney Wonder cruise ship refreshed and recharged to commence the second and final half of our national road trip with several days in our favorite state Oregon.

Microsoft Headquarters

On our way to Oregon we were invited for lunch and a tour of Microsoft’s (more…)

Day 20 of Miami to Alaska Family Road Trip: Farewell, So Long, It’s Hard to Say Goodbye to the Disney Wonder

As we spend our final day aboard the Disney Wonder, it’s funny to note how many similarities there are between the classic TV show “The Love Boat” and our cruise experience.  Yes, I was a casual Saturday night watcher of “The Love Boat” (Gopher was my favorite character) and as life would have it 12 years ago during a marketing gig I even had the pleasure to meet Capt. Stubing (Gavin MacLeod) in person.  Capt. Stubing looked exactly as I had last seen him in TV Land and was also very personable.

Triton's and Animator's Palate were our super favorites. This photo is from Triton's.

In any case, I digress.  The similarities between the show and our real cruise come to mind because one of the things that ALWAYS happened on the show was that passengers and crew were like family by the end of the trip.

Alas, this is the case with us as we prepare to bid adieu to the Disney Wonder and the many folks that behind the scene made it so special for us. (more…)

Day 19 of Miami to Alaska Family Road Trip: Lumberjack Adventures and Totem Poles in Ketchikan

On the 19th day of our family road trip across the U.S.A. our Disney Wonder cruise to Alaska made its last port of call in the tiny town of Ketchikan, Alaska, home to a national lumberjack school, capital of salmon fishing and headquarters to the world’s largest collection of Native American totem poles.

Saxman Native Village Totem Pole Park

We started our day with a short bus ride to the Saxman Native Village Totem Pole Park.  (more…)

Day 18 of the Miami to Alaska Family Road Trip: Tripping with Bears in Juneau, Alaska

A day after our historic walk atop an Alaskan glacier our Disney Wonder cruise pit stopped in the surprisingly small state capital Juneau (population 31,262) where we disembarked for a special excursion aboard a nostalgic floatplane and went in search of elusive bears.

Floatplanes Are the Way to Fly

In Juneau, the only state capital that must be accessed by floatplane or boat, seaplanes are not a luxury but a necessity.  Yes, you read right, in Juneau (and in much of Alaska) floatplanes are like cars and if you live there and you don’t own one to get around chances are you can probably hitch a ride with somebody who does. Day 17 of the Miami to Alaska Family Road Trip: Flying Over and Walking on Glaciers in Skagway

Majestic.  God-inspired awesome.  Breath-taking.

Neither pictures nor words can fully describe the unfathomable beauty of what our family beheld in Skagway, Alaska during the 17th day of our epic journey from Miami to Alaska.

A Helicopter Ride for the Ages

The seeds for a great day took root last night when we learned at the last moment that a slot had miraculously opened up for us to board a helicopter in Skagway for an extraordinary excursion that involved flying to and landing on a remote gorgeous glacier.

Briani sat next to me for our flight to the Meade Glacier.

Day 15 of the Miami to Alaska Family Road Trip: Exploring the Disney Wonder

The Golden Mickey's was a major highlight of our second day aboard the Disney Wonder. Broadway quality revues with Disney characters makes this cruise uniquely suited for families like ours.

You would think my wife and I are cruise ship experts.

We love to travel and live in Miami, cruise ship capital of the world.  We’ve been to nearly every state in the nation, trekked thru chunks of Europe and seen most of Latin America.  My wife and I have even been to Rwanda and the Congo in hard to reach central Africa.

Despite our extensive travel history, we don’t have anything to show for cruise ships.  Our Disney Wonder voyage to Alaska is my wife’s first cruise and only my second.

On this second day of our great journey to Alaska, (more…)

Day 9 of Family Road Trip from Miami to Alaska: Garden of the Gods and Pike’s Peak

Photographing all of the Garden of the Gods top spots is unusually easy by car.

On Day 9 of our family road trip the PapiMobile came to a virtual halt in Colorado as we paused from days of heavy driving and medical emergencies only to accidentally discover the majesty of Colorado Spring’s Garden of the Gods, Pike’s Peak and the quaint little town of Manitou Springs.

Garden of the Gods

The Garden of the Gods is one of Colorado Springs’ best bets for family travel and exploration.  The park is considered a national natural landmark and was named Garden of the Gods in the late 1800s when two men who came to survey the land got into a discussion about whether the land looked like a garden of beer or a Garden of the Gods.  It’s been named Garden of the Gods ever since.

On the right is the famous Balanced Rock. Our PapiMobile has really been traveling through precious lands of America.

Day 8 of Family Road Trip from Miami to Alaska: Doctors, Dentists and Diaper Rash

My wife is a great sport to have let us take this unflattering photo of her getting her root canal.

A day after the biggest crisis of our family road trip experiences, we arrived in the beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado, nervous and very worried for the health of Jonathan and Angela.

Urgent Care

After doing some research online and consulting with family, Angela and I decided to give an urgent care center the reins to our son Jonathan’s health.  Jonathan’s clothes looked like a mess from our overnight stay in our PapiMobile in Kansas so in order for him to be more presentable for the doctor my wife and I bought him some new, comfortable clothing.

After he got his shot, Jonathan nearly fainted so the urgent care folks gave him plenty of water and took his blood pressure before discharging him.

When Jonathan and I walk into the urgent care facility he was trembling in fear he would be either hospitalized, given injections or worse.  When I his age, I was the same so I understood what he was feeling.

The doctor examined Jonathan and diagnosed him with (more…)

Day 7 of Family Road Trip from Miami to Alaska: Crisis and Chaos in the PapiMobile

Day 7 of our family road trip from Miami to Alaska was a day straight out of vacation HELL.  Everything that could have gone wrong seemed to have gone wrong times two on our way from Memphis to Oklahoma.

There's a story behind these oven mitts.

A Double Shot of Pain

The day started in Memphis with my wife waking up with extreme (more…)

Day 6 of Miami to Alaska Family Road Trip: Elvis Presley’s Graceland Mansion

Family Plankiando with Elvis: You ain't never seen this before at Graceland!

I recall I was watching TV with my late grandparents Manolo and Margarita on that fateful August day in 1977 when a network news anchor interrupted regular programming to declare that Elvis was dead at 42. Elvis’ passing was the first celebrity death I remember and it stunned my Cuban grandparents in particular because he was so young when he died.

Access to the second floor, which is where Elvis collapsed, is prohibited.

Day 5 of Miami to Alaska Family Road Trip: Tupelo, Mississippi, the Birthplace of Elvis

Elvis' birthplace home.

On Day 5 of our Making Memories Family Road Trip we were supposed to reach Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee but fatigue and bad weather forced us to instead improvise a trip toElvis’ Birthplace in Tupelo, Mississippi, just two hours away from Graceland.

My girls in the front porch of Elvis' childhood home.

Elvis’ Birthplace

If you’re an Elvis aficionado, or even if you just love all things Americana, visiting Tupelo is a worthwhile pit stop because this small town gives you a historical and environmental context to who Elvis was and who he would become that you can’t get anywhere else. (more…)
