Keeping Santa’s identify a secret is much harder today for parents than when I was a boy.  Back then we didn’t have the Internet or the onslaught of cynicism that makes it hard for kids today to be as gullible as we were.

When I was a boy I honestly believed in Kris Kringle, the elves and reindeers.  Like many other Generation X’ers, I eagerly awaited the annual airing of the now classic TV movie I looked “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer”, in large part because I really believed the story.  I never bothered to question why Santa, even when he looked a little different at the Sears my grandparents took me to.    (more…)

The Story that Saved Santa

I almost killed Santa for our kids until a cool idea saved him.

My 10-year-old son was about three when I first decided I would kick Santa out of Christmas by telling him that St. Nick wasn’t real.

I don’t feel like that anymore but at the time I thought that you should not mix Santa and all the commercialism that’s attached to him with Jesus, the true reason for Christmas.  I didn’t think Christmas in and of itself was wrong but I just didn’t think the “celebration” part of it was even in the Bible to begin with.
