Photographic Journey: Our Thanksgiving Family Vacation in New York

By MANNY RUIZ

Our Thanksgiving break family vacation to New York marked a number of milestones for our infant Naomi and her sister Briani.  Our trip began with a few days in the city, where Naomi officially uttered her first word “Mama” (she said it twice so we know it was real) and culminated with a visit to family and friends in upstate New York where we spent Thanksgiving and also had a chance to visit the famous Orange County Choppers headquarters.

Visit to Orange County Choppers

Although I’ve never cared for motorcycles I have to say we were very impressed with our visit to Orange County Choppers in Newburgh, New York.  Orange County Choppers is the headquarters for the Discovery Channel show American Chopper.  The new restaurant next door is also notable for what I thought were some amazing burgers so when you go be sure to visit the restaurant.

The Legend of Zamacun and the Usefulness of Monsters

Zamacun encounters Briani.

While millions of children grew up fearing La Llorona or El Cucuy, my maternal grandparents Manolo and Margarita raised me to be afraid of the Zamacun monster.

The weird thing was not that I was afraid of an imaginary creature called Zamacun, but that I never knew or even asked what this monster really looked like.

Growing up, my grandparents made extensive use of Zamacun. He was helpful to them because I was a very hyperactive, rebellious kid who often drove them NUTS. At night, whenever my grandparents wanted me to stay away from the refrigerator, our dining room or my grandmother’s super secret guest room (she hid private stuff like gifts and jewelry there), all they had to do was to tell me that Zamacun was in the house and that was that.  Zamacun was so effective that I think it contributed to why I would sleep in a cot next to my grandparents bed until I was 14.

Many years later, when I had my own children, I decided not to use Zamacun or monsters to help me parent my older kids Jonathan (now 12) or Elena (now 8). Oh, I would use monster stuff and weird sounds to give them a fun jolting scare here and there but it was always just for quick fun.  From the time they were little I taught my older kids that God is bigger than monsters.  My paternal grandmother Micaela, the one who directly helped me conquer my fear of monsters and ghosts, was fond of saying: “Be afraid of the living and not the dead.”

ZAMACUN RETURNS

The legendary Zamacun was all but forgotten until just a few weeks ago when I decided to resurrect him to help me control my cute but decidedly rebellious three year old daughter Briani.

It happened at Disney, of all places.  My wife, kids and I were at a conference in Orlando when a giant coral-looking character on stilts came walking to the pool area where Briani and my older kids were congregated.  Briani was being her usual wild self until she noticed the coral-looking creature.   In three years I had never seen her go more bonkers with fear.  (Her teachers say she’s both fearless and defiant).

When I saw my terrified daughter, I had one immediate reaction.  ”ZAMACUN!,” I yelled at the creature from a distant.

My wife and kids were in the process of trying to calm Briani down about the coral monster when I discovered the historic opportunity to formally introduce this monster to Briani: “ZAMACUN!, ZAMACUN!,” I said to the creature as if that were his name. “ZAMACUN, GET BRIANI! GET HER, ZAMACUN!”

Briani was publicly shrieking with even more terror, my wife and kids were confused and the coral monster was probably saying inside his body suit, “What the heck is going on with this crazy dad?” but there I was, seemingly doing something most parents would never do but feeling completely justified that perhaps for Briani, a little Zamacun in her life was necessary.

Almost four decades after my own grandparents introduced me to to the faceless creature that helped keep me in check, I had presented Zamacun to my own little daughter and this time Zamacun actually has a face.  I even have a photo to prove it.

Wordless Wednesday: The School Cot

Briani is one her pre-school's best sleepers but don't try to put her on a cot or bed at home. She won't have it.

This photo of my daughter Briani on her school cot gave me a flashback to my own pre-school days.  I was always the hardest and last one to sleep.  Do you remember when you slept in one of these?

The Little First-Timer

At the tender age of two years, six months and four days, my daughter Briani recently joined a long family tradition: she became an official first time visitor to Disney’s Magic Kingdom theme park in Orlando.

Normally this isn’t a big deal for most people who like me, grew up in Miami.  I’ve been to Disney more than 40 times personally and if you think that’s much my 70-something year-old aunts Millin and Mercedez have easily been there more than 150 times EACH.  The Magic Kingdom is a major but common family destination for us South Floridians.

The reason Briani’s visit was so special was not only because it was the first time all three of my kids, wife and I visited the Magic Kingdom together but also because this theme park in particular has been the only place in the world where I’ve made memories with nearly every generation of my family and friends.

How to Brush Virtually Any Infant or Toddlers’ Teeth

It ain't pretty but it works

If you’re like most parents with babies or toddlers, you’re having a tough time brushing their teeth.  As the father of three, I know.   I’ve been through this parenting stage three times and I’ve tried everything in the book to get my kids to cooperate including jokes, songs and other silly things I’m too embarrassed to mention here.

My two-year-old Briani is in this stage now so here’s a PapiBlogger homemade trick I have that is guaranteed to work: make your child cry when you need to clean their pearly whites.

No, I’m not saying to hurt your child.  What I really mean is that if your baby or toddler isn’t cooperating to brush their teeth simply do something that gets them to cry.   The reason you want them to do that is because toddlers usually open their mouthes wide to cry and that makes it ideal for you to stick their toothbrush inside their mouth and clean their teeth.

Briani recently caught on to my trick so now I can’t brush her teeth standing anymore.  In Briani’s case I make her cry AND I don’t put the toothbrush in her mouth until I hold her head down in a flat surface like our bed.  This makes it much harder for her to spit out the toothpaste.  It ain’t pretty but it works.

What works for you with your baby or toddler?

Why Our Baby’s Back to Sleeping With Us

A couple months ago I wrote that I was having a tough time getting my two-year-old Briani to sleep in her crib.  I had bed broken my two older kids so even though my wife was against it, I thought I would be able to persist enough that I would manage to officially get our toddler to sleep in her bed.

Well, it turns out Briani won this battle.  After two years of battling my wife and toddler about this issue I gave in to her.   Briani’s cuteness is so hard to fight now that she’s talking that for the the foreseeable future Briani’s back in our bed to stay. (more…)

Day 45 of PapiBlogger Road Trip Explores Savannah’s Hollywood Ties and Answers Whether City Really is Ghost Infested

Savannah is one of the top destinations are family will return to. Except for the summer humidity, it's a great place to visit. Photo sponsored by McDonald's.

On the 45th day of the PapiBlogger Family Road Trip, we explored Savannah’s rich heritage in Hollywood films and ghost hauntings and we also tried to settle once and for all whether orbs really exist.

SAVANNAH CHARMING BUT OH SOOOOOOOOOO HUMID

Is an orb lurking in this photo? See the lit up, Photoshop edited version below and you decide for yourself if an orb is in the image.

Your visit to Savannah, the oldest city in Georgia (1733) and quite possibly the most beautiful one in the Old South, will leave you in awe.  There are more than 20 public squares, hundreds of stately homes from the 1800s and miles of streets lined with gorgeous oak trees and Spanish moss.
