Tinkerbell3530, although I agree with your passion, I have to somewhat disagree with your statement.

Cavities happen for many reasons, and believe it or not a lot of it has to do with parents, caregivers and family members unknowingly passing bacteria from one person to another. Brushing IS important, but it is not the end all be all. Most children that get cavities that young have more of an imbalance of acids caused by foods or drinks that are high in sugar.

Carbs are the only thing that break down in the mouth, and carbs also feed plaque and the bacteria that causes cavities.
Knowing how to create BALANCE in the mouth is key to stopping cavities. I've put my career as a hygienist on the line, and have created www.oralhealthcoaching.com to educate people all over the world how to stop cavities and gum disease at home with natural products and understanding balance.

Good luck to you, I hope you and your family have it all under control, but if you find yourself at a loss, or interested in what I have to say, I'd be happy to help!

I can totally understand where you are coming from on this post, as a parent I find one of the most frustrating things to do is toothbrushing, but as a hygienist I beg you to find another means to get them clean! What this is doing is creating a negative connotation with oral health in general. There are many other ways to get them clean....how about just letting them chew on a toothbrush during story time, or let them watch you do it, and give them a chance to explore? Be creative, there are loads of other options. Here is a blog post that I did with some other options. Use toothpaste that is free of SLS or fluoride and then you don't have to worry if they swallow some of it :) Good luck, but please do your child the favor of making it a fun non dreadful experience....http://blog.naturalgumption.com/2012/09/toddler-tooth-brushing-made-easy/

I agree that parents have to come up with a way to get their toddlers teeth brushed. Think of the pain they will go through when their teeth are filled with cavities and they need to get them filled or pulled! http://www.toddler-tips-and-tricks.com/brushing-teeth.html has several ideas to make teeth brushing less difficult for toddlers. Personally, I let my son brush his teeth first and then it's my turn. He gets to choose if I brush them with him standing on the stool in the bathroom or laying on the carpet in the hall. I also let him choose which toothbrush to use sometimes. I think the more choice you give, the better, because you can't compromise on the actual teethbrushing!

If all else fails I would MUCH rather do this than my child lose all of his teeth by the time he is 1, 2, or however old. IT CAN AND WILL HAPPEN IF THEY DONT BRUSH!. Even if they dont eat or drink sweets ANYTHING other than water can and WILL cause decay without proper consistant brushing.

This is what we have to do with my 22 month old. I would MUCH rather do this and have my son upset for a minute with me then have him at a dentist being papoosed held down by a stranger screaming while they put a needle in his mouth and extract, fill, or cap all his little teeth!! I work in a pediatric dental office and I have seen babies as young as 1 year old come in and have to have FOUR AND FIVE extractions, etc. ! Before children are two the only way to do dental work is to take them to a hospital operating room to be put to sleep or to just hold them down and do the dental work!!! ITS WORTH THE CRYING TO GET THEM CLEAN AND HEALTHY AND KEEP THEM THAT WAY!

Thanks for your note Parent of 5. Briani rarely needs to have this trick done anymore but I can assure you we've already tried the nice way you wrote about here and more. Some kids just won't let ANYTHING get in their mouthes so a parent has got to be creative or see their children suffer through tooth decay.

OR you model teeth brushing for your child and make brushing fun. Let her pick out her own toothbrush and toothpaste and even include a song or timer. What you have done is create a powerstruggle. Your solution...physically overpower her? What you are doing is cruel and developmentally inapporpriate for a young child's development.
