Family songs that inspire and won’t make adults gag

Lovely, Love My Family by The Roots

One of the best things that happened to me when my one-year-old Briani was born was that her birth forced me to revisit all the kid-friendly channels and shows that I thought I wouldn’t be regularly seeing anymore.  When my six -year-old Elena was a toddler, TV viewing was about Blues Clues, Sesame Street and Barney, all fine shows but none of which I think compares to my new favorite Yo Gabba Gabba.

If you haven’t seen Yo Gabba Gabba, you’ll think I’m crazy but it’s a great show for adults and if I had more time I would dare say I can watch it all the time.  The program is not only a terrific treat visually-speaking but it’s also got great family-friendly music that is actually not tacky, predictable or nauseating.  I’ve built a small but cool song collection with some of the tunes on the program, including my absolute, all-time family favorite, “Lovely, Love My Family” by a band called The Roots.   You can get that song and my other major favorite “There’s a Party in My Tummy” on iTunes.

Do you have any family-favorite songs that are as catchy nice as these?  Let us know.  I want to add more songs to my iTunes family collection and I just don’t know where to turn to for songs that are both great for the kids and for adults.

I love the Roots – you know they are Jimmy Fallon’s late night band!

Another kid band that actually has pretty decent music is Ralph’s World. My 4-year-old daughter Siena loves him and I find myself singing along. I’d love to find an equivalent in Spanish – while I love Cri-Cri, what makes Ralph so compelling is that my daughter looks forward to seeing him in concert. He just performed at the zoo here in Chicago on Sunday and she had that date marked on her calendar for WEEKS! I hope you get more comments with suggestions. I will likely hit up Ana on and see if she has any suggestions. Love the blog!! Un abrazo!

PS- I will say I’ve watched an occasional episode of Yo Gabba Gabba and my overall impression is that the adults who created it… must have put something funny in their coffee… o en sus cigarritos 😉
