As I write this post Hurricane Irene is about to barrel into New York and other parts of New England so as a former reporter who’s covered hurricanes and a father who’s been through six of these suckers here’s my top five most important hurricane survival tips for families:
1. Don’t make the common “rookie” mistake of treating hurricanes as fun events. This is foolish and often leads to unnecessary injuries and even deaths from people who underestimate the power of storms. If you’re tempted to sneak outside to see the storm for yourself, don’t!
2. If you own a power generator DO NOT use it inside your home or apartment. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a silent killer (more…)

Posted by PapiBlogger on Saturday June 11th, 2011 at 05:24 PMI’m partial to NFL football and pro basketball but last night my wife, son and youngest daughter had a terrific treat viewing a pro soccer double-header in Miami courtesy of Sprint. Whenever I watch a soccer match I always fear the infamous scoreless ties but there weren’t any of those last night. In the midst of an electric, foot-stomping, flag-waving atmosphere Jamaica shut Guatemala out 2-0 and Honduras beat Granada by a whopping 7 goals to 1.

Honduras scores one of its 7 goals against Granada.

Keeping A Safe Distance From Our Idols

Working in the fields of public relations and journalism have been both a blessing and a curse for me from the perspective of getting up close to celebrities and other famous people. All of us in public relations have stories of people we formerly admired – worshipped even – until the moment we ended up working with them.
One of the nicer PR experiences I had was when I got to work personally for two full days as the publicist for the cast of the 50’s sitcom “Leave it to Beaver”. Jerry Mathers (The Beaver), Tony Dow (Wally) and Ken Osmond (Eddie Haskell) were great people, genuinely cared for each other and left me with a hunger for watching more of that classic 50’s show that pioneered the modern sitcom.
The time I met my top childhood idol, Miami Dolphins QB great Dan Marino (more…)
Neat freak parents, get over it: Toddlers Paint Walls!
Posted by PapiBlogger on Saturday October 30th, 2010 at 09:15 AM
Briani painted our house walls for the first time on the same week she decided to do a wall mural with her poop.
I have three kids so trust me when I tell you that this makes me an expert about one thing you should know about toddlers: they ALL paint walls.
Take my two-year-old Briani, for example, who on the very same week she first ever decided to create a mural with her Crayola crayons on our dining room wall also used her artistic talent to “paint” our hallway’s wall with her poop. (more…)
Has Your Kid Done Something More Disgusting Than This? Tell Us and Win a Pocket Video Camera
Posted by PapiBlogger on Wednesday October 27th, 2010 at 09:15 AMI was journaling something sweet about my two-year-old daughter Briani the other day when she suddenly stood in front of the bedroom fan looking at me. In just seconds a rancid smell of caca hit my nose prompting me to notice that she not only had her diapers by her ankles but that her hands and neck were stained with poop.
“Ha, ha!” she said mischeviously as I rushed to her side to contain the poop and told her not to move. A quick scan of the nearby floor and hallway revealed a major case “of poopizide.” (more…)
Papi’s Father’s Day Legacy to Me: Love and Practical Jokes
Posted by PapiBlogger on Friday June 18th, 2010 at 11:59 AMI chose the “Papi” part of PapiBlogger’s name in honor of my late father Santos Antonio “Tony” Ruiz who at the age of 60 passed in 2005 from smoking-related cancer.
My dad was a hardworking, blue collar type of guy with a sharp sense of humor and a fervent sense of patriotism for both Cuba and the United States. When I think about my real “Papi” this Father’s Day, there are numerous legacies he’s left me but there’s two that have particularly served me well.
