PapiBlogger Holiday Video Underscores Our Commitment to Helping the Salvation Army and Other Worthy Charities

It was a bit late in being uploaded but here’s a very short video we compiled to encourage you, our readers and friends, to remember the hard and often thankless work of the Salvation Army.  The Salvation Army’s work has nearly doubled during this recession and yet donations are down by more than 20%.

As a very small token of our support, my family and I recently took a bounty of toys to our local Salvation Army warehouse.  Many of these top quality toys were donated courtesy of Wal-mart, Fisher-Price, Baby Abuelita, Kolcraft and other companies that were featured as part of our very successful PapiBlogger Holiday Gift Guide.  We didn’t put this video together to show off or let others know that we think we’re good but rather to remind all of us that it is more blessed to give than receive and especially when it comes to the Salvation Army and other worthy charities like the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

4 Tips to Make Your Santa Story Last Longer

Some Santas just don't wear the suit with dignity so it's best to expose them as posers. (Photo by PapiBlogger, 2010).

Keeping Santa’s identify a secret is much harder today for parents than when I was a boy.  Back then we didn’t have the Internet or the onslaught of cynicism that makes it hard for kids today to be as gullible as we were.

When I was a boy I honestly believed in Kris Kringle, the elves and reindeers.  Like many other Generation X’ers, I eagerly awaited the annual airing of the now classic TV movie I looked “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer”, in large part because I really believed the story.  I never bothered to question why Santa, even when he looked a little different at the Sears my grandparents took me to.    (more…)

The Story that Saved Santa

I almost killed Santa for our kids until a cool idea saved him.

My 10-year-old son was about three when I first decided I would kick Santa out of Christmas by telling him that St. Nick wasn’t real.

I don’t feel like that anymore but at the time I thought that you should not mix Santa and all the commercialism that’s attached to him with Jesus, the true reason for Christmas.  I didn’t think Christmas in and of itself was wrong but I just didn’t think the “celebration” part of it was even in the Bible to begin with. Parenting Insights for the Holiday Toy-Buying Season

Researching the toys with your child will help you select toys that won't languish in the closet. Pictured here is the Fisher-Price ImagiNext Bigfoot, a gift my own children ranked highly for this Christmas.

In the blue-collar Latino family that I grew up in, you sacrificed everything you could to give the kids the presents they wanted for the holidays.

My brother, a cop, for example, is going to be working numerous off duty gigs this month in order to go all out for my niece’s Santa list.  Like robots, my sister and I have always done the same for our children.  None of us has ever stopped to question the FAMILY TRADITION about gifts because it seems so harmless.

I would have continued the tradition this year except for a revelation that I got recently while cleaning my kids’ closet.  My liberating insight? (more…)
