Neat freak parents, get over it: Toddlers Paint Walls!

Briani painted our house walls for the first time on the same week she decided to do a wall mural with her poop.

I have three kids so trust me when I tell you that this makes me an expert about one thing you should know about toddlers: they ALL paint walls.

Take my two-year-old Briani, for example, who on the very same week she first ever decided to create a mural with her Crayola crayons on our dining room wall also used her artistic talent to “paint” our hallway’s wall with her poop. (more…)

Has Your Kid Done Something More Disgusting Than This? Tell Us and Win a Pocket Video Camera

I warped the colors in this photo so you believe what I said without gagging.

I was journaling something sweet about my two-year-old daughter Briani the other day when she suddenly stood in front of the bedroom fan looking at me.  In just seconds a rancid smell of caca hit my nose prompting me to notice that she not only had her diapers by her ankles but that her hands and neck were stained with poop.

“Ha, ha!” she said mischeviously as I rushed to her side to contain the poop and told her not to move.  A quick scan of the nearby floor and hallway revealed a major case “of poopizide.” (more…)

Why Our Baby’s Back to Sleeping With Us

A couple months ago I wrote that I was having a tough time getting my two-year-old Briani to sleep in her crib.  I had bed broken my two older kids so even though my wife was against it, I thought I would be able to persist enough that I would manage to officially get our toddler to sleep in her bed.

Well, it turns out Briani won this battle.  After two years of battling my wife and toddler about this issue I gave in to her.   Briani’s cuteness is so hard to fight now that she’s talking that for the the foreseeable future Briani’s back in our bed to stay. (more…)

Flu Season Parenting Tricks, Part 2 of 2

I mentioned in part one of this two part series that I take treat my kids’ hygiene habits very seriously and not just because we’re at the start of the flu season.  I believe strong hygiene habits are a year round practice that can be life saving so today I want to share with you some home grown hygiene tricks that I use with my kids:

The Give Me Knucks Trick: This trick refers to showing your kids to tap knuckles with strangers that may want to shake their hands instead of shaking strangers’ hands.  I’m not sure if its culturally impolite to some but I don’t mind because handshaking is one of the most popular ways people casually transmit germs to each other. Flu Season Parenting Tricks, Part 1 of 2

My three kids always race and fight with each other to be the first to touch elevator buttons so the other day I finally told them the dark truth about those buttons.

“Do you like boogers?”, I asked Elena, my six-year-old. (more…)

REVIEW: American Girl’s Josefina Doll Makes a Great Cultural Gift for Hispanic Heritage and Beyond

Okay, let me start by saying that the last time PapiBlogger played with dolls 30 years ago he was busy blowing them up with firecrackers.  I don’t like dolls and I typically don’t do doll reviews but when American Girl approached me for Hispanic Heritage Month with a beautiful ‘Josefina‘ doll, I made an exception.

This Air Travel Trick Will Help Your Family Fly More Stress-Free

Our family either lives too far from us or are too busy to take care of our kids for extended periods of time so that means my wife and I do most of our busy business travel together with our toddler Briani in tow.  Along the way we’ve learned some tricks on how to travel by plane as efficiently and stress free as possible so today I want to share with you one particular family traveling trick that we’re frankly surprised is not standard practice for most.

Our family air travel advice is what I call the Leave-the-Plane-Last trick.   (more…)

Teach Your Kids to Be Safe and Accountable with the 5-Minutes-to-Report-Home Trick

We live just houses away from many of my 10-year-old son Jonathan’s closest neighborhood friends.  Given our proximity to them and the fact I know all of these kids and their parents you might assume that I have feel reasonably secure whenever my Jonathan declares to me that he’s going to see if his friend Trip or Max are home to play.

Unfortunately, I never feel my kids are secure enough.  I’ve seen enough things in life that I never let my parenting guard down.

In order to balance my need for protecting my son with his desire to be trusted  I’ve created what I call the 5-Minutes-to-Report-Home rule. (more…)
